Contestants
and Parents,
Welcome
to the 2010-2011 NMHSRA rodeo season. I hope everyone enjoyed their summer and is ready for an exciting year of high school
rodeo. For those of you new to the association, my name is Myra Skinner, your State Secretary. I am here to help and direct
in any manner possible, if you have any questions please feel free to call. All contact information is listed at the end of
this letter. NMHSRA also has a web page that contains important information which is updated on a regular basis (www.nmhighschoolrodeo.com). You should check the site frequently for updated information!
D’Aun Gudgell is our entry secretary. Please drop in and get acquainted with
her if you have not already done so. Her contact information is on the website, so please become familiar with this information.
We are looking forward to another great year with D’Aun.
We
would like to wish our National team good luck as they represent New Mexico at the National Finals in Gillette, Wyoming.
As
we begin the new year, we need to thank many hard working people who helped at the finals as well as throughout the year.
I would like to thank everyone that contributed to the National basket. We would also like to say thank you to those whom
contributed to the Silent Auction fundraiser. This activity raised over $1,200.00 for the association. We collected $9998.00
from the raffle ticket fundraiser. Everyone needs to thank Nellie Smith for keeping track of all that. It was NOT an easy
job. Thanks to Henry & Hilda Nakai for providing us with quality pictures year after year. A big thank to Pat Gray for
the great volleyball tournament; Donnette Nelson for the professional job organizing the Scholarship interviews and Sherri
Montoya at check in. We would also like to thank Tilt James and his ministry for providing the inspiring church services throughout
the year.
The
annual Board of Directors meeting will be held on August 8th, 2010. We also have several new
directors that will be joining us this year. We want to welcome them to the board. A complete list of the Directors and Officers,
along with their contact information will be available on the web page. You will also be getting this information in your
entry packet from D’Aun Gudgell.

MANDATORY
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
We
will be having a mandatory general membership meeting at the Gallup rodeo, Saturday, August 28th, at 8:00am in
the grandstands. You will be given general information, new ground rules. PLEASE
read the following information carefully.
ELECTION OF STUDENT EVENT DIRECTORS
We will be electing student event directors. If you are interested you need
to talk to your adult event director on Saturday at
Gallup. The adult event directors will turn in a maximum of three names by the end of Saturday at the Gallup rodeo, which will then be put on a voting ballot. You can only
vote for the student directors in the events you participate. You will vote for the directors by ballot at Gallup. These individuals represent you, please make sure you vote. Elections
will be held on Sunday. Once again, if you run for a directorship, please be prepared to WORK!
I hope you will consider being a student event director. It is work but
you will learn a lot, have fun, and it looks great on your scholarship applications!
Call me if you have any questions.
NEW STUDENT DIRECTOR DUTIES
You
are responsible for your event. You MUST be in the arena for your event at every performance! You should be available to contestants
if a problem arises in your event, and be prepared to be an advocate for the contestant when consulting with the adult director.
KNOW YOUR RULE BOOK FOR YOUR EVENT. If you are unable to attend a rodeo, assign someone to replace you. You must inform the
adult president and event director concerning your replacement.
Attend
all general membership meetings called by Student president.
Take
down and set up all arena banners provided by the adult BOD during all rodeos.
Be
prepared to help student officers with all fund raisers, community service, and general membership activities. Help officers
decorate and plan for cowboy prom.
Each
director is required to acquire a minimum of a $100.00 donation due to State Secretary before the end of the first semester
is completed.
ATTENTION SENIORS 2011
Congratulations!
You are in your final year of high school rodeo, with that accomplishment comes responsibilities. If you plan to apply for a NMHSRA Scholarship, you must meet all the criteria. You CANNOT wait until the
last minute to get that done. One requirement is taking a college entrance exam (ACT or SAT). These tests are given certain times of the year and you need to register early. If you need help check
with your school counselor. You also need to keep a record of the community service, leadership activities, and volunteer
work not only through high school rodeo but school and church also. As the year progresses, it is hard to remember all your
activities. Get a calendar and write down the information as events happen. The small steps you do now will help tremendously
next spring. Remember, if you need help ask!
Tilt
James will be conducting church service either Saturday after the rodeo. Look for more information on the website. Come and
enjoy his enthusiasm and wonderful message.
You will receive
new ground rules in your membership packet. Please be sure to read them carefully.
They will be enforced and you need to become familiar with them.
